Is your domain name working hard enough?
Currently, whether you have registered a .com or a .co.uk domain there are no restrictions if you would like to register both versions of your domain name - and many people do!.
Of course, the choice is all a matter of your preference - .com is often regarded as "International" where the .co.uk domain is deemed to be "UK only", usually it depends on the target market.
Whilst, the .com domain is recognised world wide, it is easier to remember and to type, and there is a whole world full of people who could register it before you do!
If your target is primarily the UK market then registering just the .co.uk domain would seem to be the obvious choice. The .co.uk instantly identifies you as a UK company and often, given a list of URLs in a search engine, people will choose a domain / URL with their country code. Therefore, it follows that if you want to extend your target market then registering your domain with other country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) will expand your target audience.
Registering both .com and .co.uk (and others such as .at, .dk, .es, .eu, .ie, .it, .nz, .se etc) domain names in fact makes very good sense - it stops anyone else from registering your name and leaves it ready for you to use either right away or in the future. Background
.fi is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Finland.
The ccTLD for Finland, an abbreviation for Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain, is .fi. It is managed by FICORA who are the finnish Communications regulatory Authority. On December 4, 1986, the Finnish Inix Users Group from Tampere sent a request to register a top-level domain name for Finland. This was granted and the Tampere University of Technology took responsibility for the .fi TLD. This management was later transferred from FICIX to FICORA.
Domain names were previously regulated on a very strict basic and registrations were only accepted if the registrations were from company names or companies which owned trademarks. This changed in 2003 due to many Finnish companies turning to other top-level domains and this had to be changed. A well known website using the .fi domain name was anon.penet.fi which was known as the Penet Remailer. It was a privately operated server which allowed its users to post e-mail and Usenet messages. :1986
If your domain name is based off the name of a person, it must be done by a person of the same name. You cannot use the domain name of other companies.
Since 2006, private persons have also been allowed to apply for domain names. Restrictions still apply as there are certain rules that must be revised before picking a domain name. These are as follows:
- Characters from the Roman Alphabet (a-z) can be used, along with the Arabic digits (0-9).
- Characters from the native language in Finland are acceptable.
- Hyphens (-) can be placed in the domain name but they cannot be at the beginning or end. Two hyphens cannot be placed in a row (--).
- The minimum length of a domain name is 2 characters.
- The maximum length is 63 characters. For practical reasons, it is not recommended to make it this long.
- The domain name cannot be trademarked. If you want to check and make sure your domain name is suitable, there are many free public registers which you can check.
There are currently over 200,000 registered .fi domain names. It is now possible to register domains for up to five years. The waiting period after termination of the domain name is only one month.
